A car key locksmith does far more than copy keys. The most common jobs are car key replacement, emergency lockouts, transponder and smart key programming, key fob replacement, broken key extraction, ignition repair and spare key cutting. Almost all of it can be done on-site by a mobile tech, usually faster and cheaper than the dealership.

Modern cars use advanced security, transponder keys, smart keys and remote fobs that need special tools and know-how to repair, replace or program. Many drivers think the dealership is their only option, but a locksmith covers the same ground, often more easily and for less. Here is a quick map of the common services and when you would need each one.
| Service | When you need it |
|---|---|
| Car key replacement | Key lost or badly worn, even with no original |
| Emergency lockout | Keys locked inside, or a lock that will not open |
| Transponder key programming | Chip key not recognised, engine will not start |
| Key fob replacement | Fob dead, water-damaged or worn out |
| Broken key extraction | Key snapped off in the door lock or ignition |
| Ignition repair | Key turns hard, or will not turn at all |
| Smart / push-to-start | Proximity key lost, damaged or failing |
| Spare key | A backup made before you ever lose your only key |
Car key replacement
This is the most requested job: making a new key when yours is lost or badly worn, often without needing the original. The locksmith reads the key code, cuts a new key to fit your car and programs any electronics so it works just like the factory key. It covers metal, transponder, laser-cut and smart keys, and a mobile unit usually does it at your location, with no towing and none of the multi-day wait the dealership often involves. Emergency vehicle lockout assistance
Keys locked inside, or a door lock that will not budge? Lockouts are one of the most common calls, and they rarely happen at a good time. A locksmith opens the car with the proper tools and protects the weather stripping, glass and lock that coat hangers and wedges so often damage. Because lockouts can happen at any hour, this is usually a 24/7 service, and a mobile tech can often have you back in the car within minutes of arriving. See our car lockout service.
Transponder key programming
Most cars built since the late 1990s use a chip key that the immobilizer has to recognise before the engine will start. Programming is a special job. The locksmith plugs diagnostic tools into the car, sets up the new key to the maker's spec, and can also swap a damaged chip or remove a lost key from the system. When a chip key fails, many drivers assume they have to visit the dealer, but a qualified locksmith usually does the same transponder key programming for less.
Key fob replacement and programming
Key fobs handle locking, unlocking, remote start and trunk release, and over time they fail from dead batteries, water damage or wear. A locksmith replaces the unit and programs it to your car's computer, then checks every button before handing it over. As with most of these jobs, mobile service means you skip the dealership visit. See key fob replacement.

Keys snap off inside door locks and ignitions from age, force or a worn lock, leaving the broken piece stuck and the car shut. A locksmith pulls the broken piece out without harming the cylinder and then cuts a fresh key, so you avoid a much pricier lock or ignition swap. See broken key extraction.
Ignition repair and replacement
Sometimes the key is fine and the ignition is the problem: worn wafers, damaged internals or a cylinder that no longer turns. A locksmith works out whether a repair will fix it or whether the cylinder needs replacing, then fits the right parts and ties them back into the car's security system, which may mean rekeying or programming. Smart key and push-to-start services
Smart keys let you unlock and start a car without ever inserting a key, using a coded signal between the fob and the car. When one is lost, damaged or playing up, a locksmith supplies and programs a replacement and wipes the old key from memory so it can no longer start the car, which is an important security step. These jobs need advanced, brand-specific tools, which good locksmiths keep adding to. See smart key programming.
Spare key creation
Making a spare while your original still works is the cheapest insurance against a future lockout. A copy costs far less than an emergency key made with no working key, can be shared with family or other drivers, and takes away the risk of relying on a single key. It is one of the simplest, smartest calls a car owner can make.
Mobile service across the GTA
The thread running through all of these jobs is mobility. A fully stocked mobile automotive locksmith carries cutting machines, diagnostic tools, programming gear and replacement parts in the van, so the work comes to you, at home, at work, in a parking lot or stranded roadside, anywhere across the Greater Toronto Area, with no towing needed.
